As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) celebrating 75 years of India’s Independence, a felicitation programme in honour of (L) Pa Sonaram R Sangma was held at Mendipathar College in Resubelpara yesterday.
Pa Sonaram R Sangma was one among the Garo freedom fighters who fought for the right and freedom of the Garo people against the British not by might but by Constitutional power. He was also the first Garo political leader who awakened the spirit of nationalism among the Garo people.
The programme AKAM aimed to commemorate the nation’s history and culture and also to pay tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices have made freedom a reality.
Retired IAS, Iona R Sangma, a relative of the freedom fighter, enlightened the gathering on his life values and added that the transparency and consistency with which Sonaram exhibited in his work were the qualities that should evoke the consciousness of the people.
Iona appealed to the district officials that a memorial stone be built at the birthplace of Sonaram in Nachirongdik in Garo Hills. She informed that although his death anniversary is being observed every year at his cemetery in Bakrapur, that area falls under the jurisdiction of the Goalpara district.
Deputy Speaker, Timothy D Shira graced the occasion as the chief guest where he highlighted the life story of Sonaram. He urged the gathering to strive towards a brighter future by making the most of the available resources.
Others who spoke at the occasion were Deputy Commissioner, RP Marak, Rev. Alpha Sengba Marak, Executive Secretary, Krima No. I and Vice Principal, Mendipathar College.
Song presentation on the life account of Pa Sonaram Sangma by Peace Club, Resubelpara, and skits performed by students of Paschal secondary school, Resubelpara marked the day.
