Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ri-Bhoi, in collaboration with ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute, organised a field day on improved processing of the potato variety kufri frysona today at Thadnongiaw village.
The field day was organised to showcase the technology to the line departments, and 30 villagers at the field of Manosha Syngkli and Jemnud Marpan.
The participants were told of the importance in growing potatoes for crop diversification, intensification, especially processing varieties that are helpful for employment generation and doubling farmers income.
It was also emphasised that quality seeds, improved varieties and scientific potato cultivation practices be used. Farmers are expected to obtain 30-35 tonnes per hectare, which is higher than the national average yield of 24t/ha, a KVK press release stated. The yield potential indicates a future possibility of area expansion and adoption of potato processing varieties in Ri-Bhoi.
There was also a group discussion in order to clarify the doubts of the farmers. The programme was concluded with a farmer to farmer interaction session so that the farmers could share their experiences, knowledge and skills between them.
