The Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission has called for a meeting to discuss the steep drop in prices for chayote(locally known as Piskot), which is hurting farmers who grow the squash.
The Hill Farmers Union (HFU) has apprised the chairman of the Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission, KN Kumar, on the crash in price of the crop.
Informing this today, Commander Shangpliang, president of the HFU, said that Kumar has called the HFU to a meeting on August 31 to discuss the matter.
The president of HFU said that during the meeting schedule on August 31 they will also apprise Kumar of the crash in the prices of cabbage, radish, tomatoes, ginger and other vegetables.
The HFU yesterday told Highland Post that the reason for the crash in price on chayote was lack of demand in Assam.
Farmers in South West Khasi Hills have raised concern over the drop in prices of the vegetable that went down to Rs 2. Farmers, who had invested heavily in chayote, are shattered as they are forced to sell at throwaway prices of Rs 2 per kg just three days back; yesterday they informed HP that the price had decreased to Rs 1 per kilo.
However, the price of the squash in Shillong remains comparatively high at anywhere between Rs 20 to Rs 40 per kilogramme.
