The clamour for an investigation into the mysterious deaths of an aunt and her nephew in Haryana gained ground in Assam, Nagaland and Meghalaya, with many seeking answers on the incident.
As per reports, air hostess Rose Sangma and her nephew Samuel Sangma, who were both living around the National Capital Region (NCR), died under mysterious circumstances with the aunt’s death apparently a natural one while her nephew’s was termed as suicide by Haryana police.
The body of Samuel, which was received by his parents, allegedly bore marks of physical assault, leading to many asking the basis for calling the death one by suicide.
According to the father of the victim, Samuel had no reason to give up his life and it was only on the youth’s insistence that his aunt, who was suffering from severe pains on June 22, was taken to hospital.
“After reaching the hospital, Rose was placed in the ICU while Samuel and his uncle, Albert, stood by to care for her. After being administered some medicines, Rose began to recover from the pains she felt on the left side of her body,” said Samuel’s father, who is also the brother-in-law of Rose.
Apparently, after Samuel and his uncle found Rose to be recovering, they went out of the hospital to grab a quick bite.
It was upon their return that things took a drastic turn. If sources are to be believed, Samuel and his uncle found the doctors giving Rose ice cream even when she was struggling to breathe in the ICU. When they questioned this, the doctors apparently tried to threaten them from taking videos of the incident. Rose died soon after.
Unhappy with her aunt’s death, Samuel threatened to fight on and raised the matter with the authorities, even refusing to take Rose’s body from the hospital. It was only after the intervention of Haryana police that the body was taken.
“After Samuel was dropped by his friends at the hotel where he was placed by the call centre where he works, the news broke that Samuel had died by hanging. However, we are not convinced and have appealed for an investigation into my son’s death,” said the father when contacted today.
Samuel’s body was found on June 23.
His remains reached his village in Karbi Anglong, Assam, yesterday where news of the death spread like wildfire.
“The body bore torture marks. His teeth were bashed in while there were severe bruises on his legs. Further there were also torture marks to the back of his head where blood had clotted. If he had died by hanging, where did these marks come from?” asked the father.
Meanwhile the family of the victims have written to the Chief Ministers of Nagaland and Meghalaya as well as the lone Garo legislator of Assam, Numal Momin, seeking their intervention so that justice can be served. The uncooperative attitude of the Haryana police has further added to the mystery.
“The police insisted that it was a case of death by hanging but when we asked for the post-mortem report, they said it would take 15-20 days. Our family is completely broken by what happened and we only demand to know what happened,” added the father.
The family members are now mulling their options in trying to find out the truth.
Meanwhile, the death of the two has caused a massive uproar and the clamour for an investigation into the circumstances of the deaths has gained ground. Viral videos of the behaviour of the doctors and nurses at the private nursing home in Gurugram where the incident took place have been doing the rounds on social media, with many seeking justice for the aunt and nephew.
“The deaths of the two are condoled but we also condemn the inhuman behavior of the doctors and nurses at the hospital where they were lodged. ADE appeals to the Haryana government to look into the occurrence closely and to bring the culprits to justice. We demand a probe into the mysterious suicide of Samuel Sangma,” said ADE president, Dalseng B Ch Momin.
Meanwhile, the Public Joint Action Committee and the A’chik Border Association (ABA) in Dainadubi in North Garo Hills, also questioned the circumstances leading to the death of Samuel and Rose.
“We are not convinced it’s a case of suicide. I spoke to the family of the victim who said that there were multiple injury marks on the body. The death looks suspicious as Samuel had threatened to raise the matter of his aunt’s death with authorities and was being prevented from taking videos. He was even assaulted in the hospital itself,” said general secretary of PJAC, Sutindro Marak.
