The shock, horror and grief of family and the community of Nongrah Nonglum were multiplied after the bodies of the two children who were murdered by their father were brought home today. The funeral will be held tomorrow.
The gruesome murder has stunned the neighbourhood but further truths about the actual state of the father were brought out into the open.
Joefersson Jana is suspected of leading his two children into the nearby forest and murdering them there on Monday. He left their bodies in the forest and absconded before being arrested by police yesterday.
The bodies of the two children underwent autopsies at NEIGRIHMS and were brought home today in two small coffins.
Information about the case which has shocked and dumbfounded the locality has started to trickle out from among the village residents. Contrary to what the headman had told local news channels yesterday, namely that the father was gentle with no visible signs of a dysfunctional personality, today it was learnt from local sources that the accused was struggling with alcohol addiction and allegedly had a history of domestic violence.
Jana had separated from his wife at the time of the incident. Recently, he had tried to get his wife to accept him back but she had insisted that he beat his habit first.
The wife and Jana’s mother had visited Rynjah Police Station a few days ago to register a complaint of some kind but, while there, the wife instead asked police for help with Jana’s drinking problem, for which the police referred them to a local doctor.
Jana visited the doctor on May 28 and he began taking the medicines prescribed. However, family members say that he did not stop drinking.
He reportedly then took his children out with him on the pretext of an outing. In the forest, however, he slit their throats and then disappeared, eluding police until he returned to his family home from where he was arrested.
Today, while the inquest was going on, he led police to the scene of the horrific crime.
Meanwhile, some local residents said that village authorities are doing nothing about the rampant drug and illegal alcohol trade going on in the area. They blamed the police for also turning a blind eye to this.
