The expert committee on the State reservation policy has closed suggestions from stakeholders after holding public hearings throughout the State.
Chief secretary Donald Phillips Wahlang said the committee met with various stakeholders from different backgrounds so as to ensure that everyone’s point of view was considered.
The expert committee constituted by the Meghalaya government in August 2023 for reviewing the State reservation policy had received hundreds of petitions containing views and opinions of people, intellectuals, political parties and civil society organisations on the matter.
The Justice (Retired) Mool Chand Garg-led committee visited Shillong, Jowai, and several regions in the Garo Hills to hold public hearings.
“This is a crucial process that reflects the government’s commitment to inclusivity and fairness in policy-making,” the chief secretary said.
After the statewide consultations, the committee convened in Delhi to study and discuss the feedback gathered from the stakeholders.
The constitution of the expert committee to review the 1972 reservation policy was done after the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) whose leader, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, went on an indefinite hunger strike in 2023.
