Former Umroi MLA George B. Lyngdoh has resigned as Vice President of Trinamool Congress, Meghalaya State Unit, and also as President of Trinamool Congress, Umroi Block.
In his resignation letter sent today to St0ate Trinamool Congress President Charles Pyngrope, Lyngdoh cited “personal circumstances” as the reason for quitting the two posts.
“I hereby tender my resignation as vice-president, TMC Meghalaya as well as president of Umroi TMC Block Committee with immediate effect,” Lyngdoh said in the letter. “This decision is driven by personal circumstances,” he added.
Lyngdoh’s exit comes as a surprise to many, considering his influential position and past political contributions.
Lyngdoh was one of the 12 Congress Party legislators who defected to the TMC in 2021 under the leadership of former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma. Lyngdoh, however, lost his Umroi seat to the NPP’s political newcomer Damanbait Lamare.
He is the second TMC leader to leave the party. Earlier, TMC MLA Himalaya M Shangpliang switched over to the BJP, and later joined the NPP.
Political circles suggested Lyngdoh to be the TMC’s candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections. There were also speculations that he might join the ruling NPP, which he had rejected.
The party has yet to issue an official statement regarding Lyngdoh’s resignation and any subsequent plans for leadership reorganisation within the TMC’s Meghalaya sector.
As Lyngdoh steps away from his responsibilities within the TMC, speculation arises about potential shifts in the local political landscape, leaving room for speculation about the party’s future strategies and leadership dynamics in the region.
