Shillong, Nov 13: Former Nongkrem MLA and MDC Lambor Malngiang joined the National People’s Party (NPP) today.
He was welcomed by senior leaders, including Chief Minister and NPP National President Conrad Sangma.
Malngiang was inclined towards the NPP since 2023, when as an MDC, decided to support the then NPP-led executive committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. His party leaders had termed the move treacherous and demanded disciplinary action against him.
Malngiang had contested the 2023 Assembly election on a UDP ticket but lost. He was elected in 2018 to the Nongkrem Assembly seat as an independent but joined the UDP before the elections. That did not help him keep his seat, however, as former legislator Ardent M Basaiawmoit rode a wave of support to win his old seat again.
Speaking at the event, Malngiang stated that he would work tirelessly to ensure the NPP’s victory in the 2028 Assembly election for the Nongkrem constituency.
NPP President Conrad Sangma said Malngiang shares the NPP’s vision and commitment to serve the people with dedication and integrity. “Together, we look forward to strengthening the party and working hand in hand to build a stronger, more progressive Meghalaya,” he added.
