Former GNLA chairman Champion Sangma and two others were arrested by police from Khanapara along with fake Indian currency notes with a face value of Rs 15 lakhs.
According to Guwahati police, Sangma was arrested by the special squad and policemen from Basistha police station while they were travelling in a Bolero bearing registration number ML07B7998.
Based on intelligence inputs, a search was made and police recovered a bag containing Rs 10,000 original currency notes and the rest of counterfeit currency notes wrapped in white papers.
Police said that Champion confessed that he paid Rs 3, 50,000 to two persons named as Poresh Das and Bijay Das at Kamrup petrol pump for Rs 15 lakh of fake currency.
The two others arrested with the former militant leader are Gohanch Sangma (36) from Songsak and Cherian Momin (28) from Tura in Meghalaya.
Champion deserted the Meghalaya Police when he was the Deputy Superintendent of Police and formed the now obliterated militant outfit, Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in 2009.
He was arrested on July 30, 2012, from the Umkrem-Pyrdiwah area on the Indo-Bangla border in East Khasi Hills district after authorities in Bangladesh handed him over to India.
Champion was released on bail from the Shillong district jail on March 24, 2018 following an order passed by the Supreme Court and formed A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) that claims to work for the welfare of the Achiks in Garo Hills.
Champion who is also facing various charges including attempt to wage war against the state under various sections of laws including the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, Indian Penal Code, and Arms Act, plans to contest the 2023 Assembly elections from Songsak constituency from Congress party.
He had joined the party and welcomed by MPCC president Vincent Pala.
