UDP general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh has said that Eugeneson Lyngdoh’s victory in the Mawphlang by-election has come as a huge morale booster to the party to perform better in the 2023 Assembly elections.
“The victory of another young leader like Eugeneson Lyngdoh has only made the United Democratic team even better and stronger and with the rest of the young MLAs of the party they will together be the voice of the youth in the state,” Mawthoh told Highland Post.
Upbeat over the fact that the UDP was able to win the by-polls earlier in Shella, Ranikor, Langrin and now Mawphlang, Mawthoh said, “We also almost won the Rajabala by-polls and we did quite well in the last GHADC elections which is an indicator that the UDP vote share is increasing and the people accept the party.”
He stated that since people are now looking for alternatives and wants to see a strong regional force, the UDP has the opportunity. “The UDP now has nine members, along with Samuel Sangma. One more MLA will be joining us which will be revealed in time and with the two HSPDP members UDP plays a very important role,” he added.
Mawthoh said that UDP continues to be a stabilizing factor with MLAs in the government and MDCs in the JHADC and KHADC and would put all its efforts to bring all regional parties together.
“Our doors are always open for those having regional aspiration and for those who want to see that there exists only one regional force in the state,” he said.
Informing that the UDP also targets to complete the party organization in all the districts and constituencies within this year, he said, “We are also very happy that the UDP office near Shillong Commerce College will soon operate, which will also boost the functioning of the party.”
