Shillong, Jan 20: A five-day Technology Orientation Training Programme for Muga silkworm rearers commenced at the Central Silk Board (CSB), Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization (MESSO), P-3 Unit in Nongpoh.
The programme, which will conclude on January 23, is attended by 25 progressive Muga sericulture farmers from Ri-Bhoi district. It aims to enhance the technical knowledge and practical skills of Muga seed rearers through scientific training sessions, hands-on demonstrations, and expert interactions. Emphasis is being laid on adopting improved and sustainable practices to strengthen Muga cocoon production in the region.
Participants are being trained on crucial aspects of Muga seed production, host plant management, disease and pest prevention, and scientific grainage techniques. The sessions are designed to ensure better productivity, improved seed quality, and long-term sustainability of the Muga silkworm industry, which plays a significant role in the livelihood of farmers in Meghalaya.
Abhishek Singh, Scientist-C and In-charge of CSB P-3 Unit, Nongpoh emphasised the objectives of the training programme and highlighted the pivotal role of the Central Silk Board in promoting sericulture development, capacity building, and technology dissemination among farmers in the region. He encouraged farmers to actively participate in the sessions and adopt scientific methods in their rearing practices.
The programme was formally inaugurated by Dr. B. N. Sarkar, Scientist-D, CSB-MESSO, Guwahati. In his address, he highlighted the challenges faced by the sector and stressed the importance of improved rearing techniques, quality seed production, and scientific management practices to enhance productivity and farmers income.
The training programme is expected to empower Muga farmers with advanced knowledge and skills, thereby contributing to the sustainable growth of the Muga sericulture industry in Ri-Bhoi District and the region as a whole.
