The Environmental Co-ordination Committee Elaka Sutnga today said despite closure orders issued by the East Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner against coke factories none of them has seized to operate.
The committee along with 18 waheh shnongs and secretary of various villages today met at Latyrke dorbar hall and expressed concern over what they call “uncared attitude” of the government to rein on these coke factories.
The meeting noted that while the district administration has ordered closure of coke factories operating in the district without the consent to operate (CTO) under the Air & Water Act including those factories that received single-window clearances none of them has shut down.
“If the uncared attitude of the government and the district administration persists we will be a forced to approach the Meghalaya High Court or even the Supreme Court in the matter,” the committee said.
The committee also decided to once again meet the deputy commissioner on August 16 on the issue and vowed to continue their opposition against the coke factories that have adversely affected the environment and health of the people in the region.
