The West Garo Hills district magistrate has imposed an order under section 144 CrPC that restricts entry of heavy vehicles transporting goods more than 9 metric tonnes within Tura municipal area.
The order was passed yesterday following two serious accidents involving heavy vehicles and several others that took place on the AMPT highway road, leading to grievous injuries.
Any heavy vehicle seeking entry into Tura must obtain written permission from the district administration, the district magistrate said.
For four and six wheeler trucks carrying less than 9 metric tonnes will be allowed to ply through Tura town between 9 pm to 6 am, while exception will be granted for government vehicles, vehicles used for official government works, public transport vehicles such as buses, tow-trucks, breakdown vans and recovery vehicles, and vehicles granted exemption by the district administration.
Government departments utilizing heavy vehicles must provide strict guidance to drivers to adhere to all traffic laws and regulations and departments are responsible to ensure that drivers receive adequate training and are aware of their obligations to promote road safety, the order said.
The district police have been directed to setup entry gate checkpoints at the entry points of the Tura town.
