Shillong, Sep 6: State Information and Public Relations Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Saturday said that in the age of social media people talk about the freedom of press but fail to talk about the responsibilities of the press.
She was speaking at the annual general meeting of the Meghalaya Editors and Publishers Association.
“The rate at which social media is engaging without monitoring is going to be dangerous,” Lyngdoh said.
She expressed concern that with the age of AI untruths will be made to be truths.
The Minister said that journalist bodies in the state should be made responsible and that flow of information should not be biased.
She said that a press trial becomes dangerous for the citizens at large.
“The moment the media picks up a story and decides that this will be the story for the next one month… with viewership dictating the world, the integrity of the press and the media is being compromised,” Lyngdoh added.
She also cautioned that the social media influencers are making journalists extinct, threatening their survival.
Lyngdoh urged the MEPA to come up with norms of what should and shouldn’t be allowed.
According to her, self-policing is an important concept for the circulation of information.
