Superintending Engineer PHE, Western Circle has tendered an apology for ‘backdoor appointments’ made in the department.
The apology letter was addressed to the West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Garod LSN Dykes who had called explanation on appointment of contractual and casual workers in the department.
The engineer in the letter said there is no guideline and the selection committee was not constituted for appointment for the posts as they were on contractual basis. He said all those appointed will be terminated and assured to follow the procedures and necessary formalities after the assembly elections.
“I sincerely apologise for my oversight in such a grave matter and the same will never be repeated again. I hope you will excuse me for the unintentional mistake, which I have committed,” the engineer said.
Irked by the illegal appointments, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) had intervened as those selected were without the knowledge of the Deputy Commissioner, who is also the chairman of the selection committee.
According to the KSU, 19 illegal appointments were made in the PHE and the District Medical and Health Office (DMHO) in West Khasi Hills.
District president John Fisher Nongsiang said appointments in the DMHO were made from the head office in Shillong, which the union will do a follow-up.
He said that the illegal appointments made in the two government offices, including other departments within the Nongstoiñ C&RD block, cannot happen without the interference of elected representatives.
Sources said the appointments were made at the behest of Nongstoiñ MLA, Macmillan Byrsat.
