West Jaiñtia Hills police rescued endangered wildlife species and detained two persons at Phramer last night.
The rescue was possible after the Phramer Traffic cell acted on information they received about a vehicle carrying the endangered species.
District Superintendent of Police, Bikram Marak informed that the rescue took place at around 11: 15 pm. During search, police found two Hoolock Gibbons, two Grey Langurs, a Great Indian Hornbill a Phyre’s Leaf Monkey and an Otter from the vehicle bearing registration number ML 11 0661, which was coming from Mizoram and bound for Guwahati.
Marak said the driver, Kormola Bru (24) of Mizoram and another occupant were detained. They along with the rescued wildlife species were handed over to the Range Forest Officer, Jowai division for safe custody and necessary action.
All the rescued species falls under Schedule 1& 2 of the Wild Life Protection Act & IUCN Red list.
Meanwhile, Forest and Environment Minister James PK Sangma said such acts will not be tolerated and perpetrators shall face stringent actions as per law.
“Animals are an integral part of our biodiversity, necessary to sustain an ecological balance, and therefore it is of paramount importance that people are aware of the need for protection and conservation of wildlife,” he tweeted.
