The Election Commission of India (ECI) will link voter ID cards (EPIC) with Aadhaar cards as per the Representation of the People Act 1950 and relevant Supreme Court judgements.
Technical consultations between UIDAI (the authority that administers Aadhaar) and experts of ECI are to begin soon, a press release informed today.
The ECI, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with ECs Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, held a meeting with top civil servants and technical experts of the ECI in New Delhi today.
As per Article 326 of the Constitution, voting rights can only be given to a citizen of India and Aadhaar cards only establish the identity of a person. However, Aadhaar can help weed out duplicate EPICs, which is a problem for the election authorities.
Therefore, it was decided that the linking of EPIC with Aadhaar will be done only as per the provisions of Article 326 of the Constitution, Section 23(4), 23(5) and 23(6) of the Representation of the People Act 1950 and in line with relevant Supreme Court judgements.
