The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has named Sunmoon Marak as its candidate for the Jirang seat in next year’s state election.
The TMC, led by its state president and leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Sangma, held a public meeting whereby Marak was named as the TMC Jirang block president and the party’s candidate in 2023.
The meeting was held today at Lumnongrim, Byrnihat, for the confirmation of the newly elected leaders and members of the TMC Jirang block.
Addressing the meeting, Dr Sangma said that the TMC is experiencing a wave of support, adding that this shows that the public are fed up with the National People’s Party-led government.
“TMC is the party which can be trusted by the people of the state and the main motive of bringing this party to the state is to bring a change and all-round development as desired by the people,” the former Chief Minister, adding that the current government is the worst in the history of the state as can be seen, he said, from the numerous protests by teachers, ASHA workers and others.
He further lambasted the government for the controversial border agreement signed between Meghalaya and Assam to resolve the dispute over six areas of difference.
Dr Sangma said that the deal was signed without taking into consideration the people who reside on the border, which has resulted in much land being given away by Meghalaya to the neighbouring state.
