The All India Congress Committee (AICC) today gave its final approval to the list of 55 candidates to contest the ensuing Meghalaya Assembly elections.
The list of candidates was released after a meeting of the party’s central election committee chaired by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge today.
The party had released the names of 40 candidates last month. There are a further 15 candidates whose names were approved.
The Congress has not fielded any candidates for Amlarem, Khliehriat constituencies in Jaiñtia Hills and Rajabala, Resubelpara and Kharkutta constituencies in Garo Hills.
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Vincent Pala during a block congress committee meeting last week had indicated that the party will not field candidates in five Assembly constituencies, where money is expected to take centre stage. He had named Khliehriat and Amlarem constituencies.
Besides Pala, other prominent names in the list include Saleng A Sangma, who had resigned as NCP MLA and joined the Congress to run from Gambegre constituency, Charles Marngar from Mawhati, Rona Khymdeit from Nongpoh, Celestine Lyngdoh from Umsning, PN Syiem from Pynthorumkhrah, Marbud Dkhar from Mawlai, John A Lyngdoh from North Shillong, Ronnie V Lyngdoh from Mylliem, Nehru Suting from Pynursla, Gabriel Wahlang from Nongstoin, Brigady N Marak from Bajengdoba, Deborah C Marak from Williamnagar, KC Boro from Tikrikilla, Billykid A Sangma from North Tura and Sayeedullah Nongrum from Mahendraganj.
