Elderly citizens of Meghalaya were recognised and honoured yesterday on the occasion of the International Day for Older People.
In South West Khasi Hills, the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) organised a programme on the theme ‘Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World’ at Mawlangwir.
In it, the DSWO felicitated 90-year-old Theresia Lyngdoh of Mawlangwir village, among others.
Dr FR Lartang, the District Medical and Health Officer, spoke about geriatric healthcare management and various government schemes.
He stressed the need to take care of the old and urged the aged to be extra careful while walking or working, to go for the regular check-up and test their blood pressure and sugar at least once a year and to eat nutritious food and be careful about their diet.
F Khongwar, the officer in charge of the elder helpline, spoke about the Maintenance Act 2007 and helpline 14567.
Meanwhile, in East Khasi Hills, the DSWO held a similar programme at Mawkdok Community Hall. Doctors were on hand to provide check-ups to attendees.
Centenarian Klin Kharbuli (102), from Laitlyngkot, was felicitated at the programme.
