Shillong, Jan 21: On the occasion of the 54th Statehood Day, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah has expressed her satisfaction that the youth of the district as well as the state are taking advantage of the government schemes of entrepreneurship.
“There are many schemes, which are now providing employment to the state’s youth,” even as the Deputy Commissioner said that they should be aware of such schemes.
She expressed her concern over the fact that most youths do not come forward to avail of the government scheme, probably due to them being ignorant, even as she urged them to visit the office of the Deputy Commissioner or the Block Development Officers to know more about such initiatives.
Speaking on the sidelines to commemorate Meghalaya’s Statehood Day, Kurbah also said that the government is now encouraging youths to take up sports as a career. “Individuals who have gained recognition (in their respective sports) there are scholarship schemes,” she said.
The Deputy Commissioner also said that for the last many years, the district as well as the state is peaceful which has led to the growth and development of Meghalaya.
According to her, Meghalaya’s 50 percent of its population are youths, their age being below 45 years and therefore there is a need to see that they finish their education.
The East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner also expressed concern about children dropping out of schools.
Kurbah said that the one reason the government has found out for children dropping out of schools is due to educational institutions being far from their houses.
“There are many lower primary schools, but there are fewer secondary, higher secondary schools. Now the government is in the process of rationalizing the schools,” she said.
