The East Khasi Hills district administration today allowed the plying of light and heavy vehicles on the Mawmaram-Nongthliew-Mawmih-Mawlyndep-Lad Umsaw road, so long as they do not exceed 9 tonnes.
However the order signed by district magistrate, RM Kurbah, directed that all light and heavy vehicles not ply over Bridge No.6/1 at Umbir and must instead utilise the designated subway constructed alongside the bridge.
The district administration’s revocation of its April 21, 2025 order came after communication and recommendation from the Public Works Department (Roads) yesterday that the construction of a subway at Bridge No. 6/1 at Umbir has been completed and is now open for public use.
“The permissible load on the bridge is restricted to 9 tonnes. However, all light and heavy vehicles are directed not to ply on the bridge itself but to use the newly constructed subway adjacent to the bridge,” the press statement stated.
