The East Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner’s office today recognised the efforts of individuals and firms that lent a hand when the district was in dire need after landslides and heavy rain disrupted life last month.
A felicitation-cum-experience sharing programme was held in Khliehriat regarding the landslides in June on National Highway 6 and other roads across the district.
Police personnel stationed in Lumshnong, Umkiang and Ratacherra were felicitated along with drivers of earth movers and excavators (JCBs) “who performed heroically” to clear debris, the EJH DC’s office said in a Facebook post.
Wholesalers were also honoured for providing relief to people stranded on the blocked roads and the Cement Manufacturers Association and Star Cement were felicitated for “their timely aid in relief and other logistics”. The DC also congratulated all the people on clearing the roads in three days despite the extensive damage.
Moreover, suggestions and comments were sought from police personnel, drivers, contractors, local people, etc regarding what steps can be taken to further improve response time in future natural disasters.
