Feeling the pulse and mindset of the people especially within Shillong has shown that if there is a will there is also a way as the old adage says. The bold and tough steps taken by the Shillong Municipal Board along with the district administration authorities is commendable which has helped in clearing the entire stretch of Police Bazaar off hawkers who have for years held this part as their “own” land to trade and barter.
This comes in the plan of the state Tourism Department to beautify and remodel parts of the area making it pedestrian friendly and bringing some civility amongst the people. The objective has been met and the benefits are for all to see and adapt to the change. We cannot remain irresponsible and haphazard when it comes to public places. At least things have to gradually change. People who had earlier opposed this idea are the very ones who now breathe a sigh of relief especially in an emergency situation if time comes to respond. Such steps undertaken by the officials of SMB and the district administration have been widely appreciated and we hope that other areas as well are streamlined.
