The Election Commission of India (ECI) has replaced Bruno Sangma with Abraham T Sangma as Superintendent of Police in North Garo Hills district today.
The decision was taken after a complaint lodged by social activist Nilberth Ch. Marak, citing family relationship between Bruno and the Tura Lok Sabha NPP candidate Agatha Sangma.
The commission in a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer, BDR Tiwari directed Abraham, the Commandant of the 2nd MLP Battalion in Georagre, to take charge as the SP of the North Garo Hills immediately.
“A confirmation shall be obtained from the State government and sent to the commission by 5 pm on 11.04.2024,” ECI Secretary Santosh Kumar Dubey said.
Bruno is a close relative of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma as he is married to the younger sister of the husband of NPP candidate Agatha Sangma. The complaint also said that Kharkutta under North Garo Hills is Bruno’s native place and also the hometown of his wife.
In the complaint, Bruno allegedly invited the chief minister and others to his personal residence which amounts to violation of the model code of conduct. He has also been accused of allowing the ongoing illegal exportation of goods to enter Bangladesh through the Gasuapara border of South Garo Hills.
