A new district to be known as Eastern West Khasi Hills will be inaugurated on November 10.
The new district to be carved out of Mairang civil sub-division will have its headquarters at Mairang.
The recommendation of the Political Department to upgrade Mairang civil sub-division into a district was approved by the State cabinet today.
With this, the number of districts in the State will go up to 12. Further, this is the second time that two new districts have been carved out of West Khasi Hills.
Earlier, there were demands for upgradation of Sohra civil sub-division into a full-fledged district.
The matter has been pending before the State government which cited geographical landscape as the hurdle.
Several MLAs such as A L Hek, Charles Pyngrope besides Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem and Shella MLA Balajied Synrem have openly stated that Sohra civil sub-division deserved to be upgraded into a full-fledged district.
