East Khasi Hills became the latest district to launch its Drugs Free campaign as part of a nationwide programme here today.
The ceremony was attended by Director of Social Welfare D D Shira and Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo.
In his speech, Shira said that drug abuse has hampered the progress of Meghalaya and added that the government is continuing to find way and means to combat the menace of drugs.
East Khasi Hills is in the top one-third of districts that are most affected by intoxicant usage, Laloo said in her introductory speech.
She added that the district administration, including police, Social Welfare Department and partner NGOs, have formulated a three-pronged approach to tackle this problem – halting the supply chain, outreach and awareness programmes.
The two dignitaries also released the Drugs Free India booklet at the function.
