East Garo Hills’ police team recovered a cache of ammunition today after receiving a tip-off in Chipot Mongre A’bri.
The police received the information yesterday from a source. Deputy Superintendent of Police Victor N Sangma led the team to the site and recovered the ammunition this morning at around 7:30am.
Forty-seven bullets, suspected to have belonged to the banned Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), were recovered by the police. The ammunition was brought to Williamnagar Police Station. Efforts are being made to recover more arms and ammunition from hiding spots in the district.
The ammunition was stored in a plastic jar and wrapped in a plastic cover before it was buried.
The ammunition is suspected to belong to the GNLA, which had its bastion in the hills between the East and South Garo Hills. The recovery today is among many that have kept police busy as the former commander of the GNLA, Sohan D Shira, allegedly hid ammunition in several places across Garo Hills.
