Haphazard earth-cutting has caused landslides and flash floods, threatening the lives of five families in Nongspung B village, Ri Bhoi district.
According to locals, one Donald Srinate has been involved in reckless earth cutting in the area since last year. The soil has become loose and has triggered landslides with mud and debris destroying their homes and plantations.
The five affected families are those of Premika Sungoh, Lijanta Sungoh, Kerning Sungoh, Manar Suring and Wompher Dhar.
Rangbah shnong of the village, Phelimon Tongper said the daily lives of the five families have not only been disrupted but has threatened their livelihoods as crops have been buried or washed away.
He said the affected families have lodged an FIR at the Pilingkata Police Outpost and so far, no action was taken against the dangerous act.
However, the village authority and the affected families are seeking assistance to address the issue to prevent further damage to their homes and farmland. They also demanded the land owner to compensate for the damages caused.
