A dumper truck that has been stolen from Assam was taken back to Silchar from Nonghyllam, South West Khasi Hills, on Friday.
Assam police and the owner of the truck went to Nonghyllam and took possession of the truck that had been stolen 20 months back.
A massive inter-state racket in stolen vehicles was exposed recently, with Shillong suspected of being the epicentre of illegal vehicle modification based on erasing vehicle identification numbers (VINs).
Three trucks stolen from Silchar were recovered from Nongjri in South West Khasi Hills in the last week of July. These trucks had been totally modified but sources said that since the chassis numbers were still intact, the rightful owners could establish their ownership.
The three recovered stolen trucks were modified in workshops in Nongthymmai, Sawlad, Demthring and Laitkor.
