Members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council’s (HYC) Kiling unit in Ri-Bhoi district intercepted an auto-rickshaw that was transporting nine kilogrammes of marijuana yesterday evening.
Three people in the rickshaw were apprehended. The drugs and suspected drug smugglers were handed over to police.
The HYC have been keeping an eye on the illegal trade in drugs and, upon receiving information about possible transportation of marijuana, laid a trap at 13th Mile where its members intercepted a rickshaw with Assam license plate (AS 25 CC 0176).
Four people were in the vehicle but one fled as soon as they were stopped by the HYC. The other three were nabbed along with two sacks filled with marijuana.
The suspected drug smugglers and their cargo were handed over to Khanapara Police Station officials, HYC Kiling unit president Bisharlang Rupsi told this reporter.
