In an incident that could easily be the plot of a television drama, a man was reported to have been kidnapped today and was then rescued by police, only for it to emerge that he was in fact a drug dealer who had been abducted by his customers.
The suspected drug dealer was identified by East Jaintia Hills police as Masoom Choudhary (20), of Katigorah Noonnagar, Assam. It was reported today afternoon that he had been kidnapped by half a dozen unknown persons who were travelling in a local taxi (ML 11 7172).
The entire district force was put on high alert and at 4:30pm, a team from Khliehriat police station rescued the victim and detained the suspected kidnappers, who were identified as Damewanhi Rymbai (28) of Rymbai Skhenshynriah, Hilari Dkhar (24) of Khliehriat West, Wanmi Muksor (30) of Khliehriat West, Deimon Shadap (29) of Dkhiah East, Deibor Sutnga (31) of Khliehriat West and Banjop Sukhlain (25) of Khliehriat West.
On being brought to the police station, preliminary interrogations revealed that Choudhary was actually a drug dealer and had delivered one soap box containing heroin to the suspected kidnappers, who then abducted him for a Rs 5 lakh ransom after taking delivery of the drugs.
Police discovered the drugs, weighing 15 grammes, in the seized taxi. Six mobile phones were also seized.
A case has been registered in Khliehriat and investigations are on to trace others involved in the drugs supply.
