In another fatal road accident in the district, the driver of a car died on the spot after he crashed into a lorry on the Shillong Bypass today morning.
A passenger travelling in the same vehicle was severely injured.
The accident occurred at around 8:30am at Umtynrah, Ri-Bhoi. The deceased was identified as Nawaz Hasan Rahmani from Badapur, Karimganj, in Assam. He was driving the car (AS 11 G 7819) from Silchar to Guwahati when the unfortunate accident took place. The sedan struck a truck (NL 01 AA 9137) travelling in the opposite direction.
The injured passenger was taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for treatment, while Rahmani’s body was taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for an autopsy. Police continue to investigate.
