The Meghalaya government should not wait for a shortage of beef in the market before acting to protect its supply, Congress legislator Ampareen Lyngdoh said today.
Speaking to Highland Post, Lyngdoh was referring to a proposed bill in Assam that could, if passed, stop the transportation of cattle through to Meghalaya.
Meghalaya does not have legislation that would help to safeguard the culinary interests of the state, where beef is part of the diet for a majority of the population but has to be imported from other states to meet demand.
“Why does our state have to wait for the situation to get complex before taking any decision knowing very well that once traffic of cattle is monitored into the state from Assam problems might arise?” she said.
The MLA opined that an immediate remedy has to be put in place to protect Meghalaya’s requirement of meat from other states.
