Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong accused leader of the opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma, of demoralising the state’s healthcare workers in an attempt to score points against the government.
Last Tuesday, Dr Sangma had said that there are certain measures that should have been put in place in rural areas in order to contain the pandemic, break the chain of transmission, prevent the possibility of a new variant emerging and save lives.
“The lack of focus and priority of this government has left the pandemic to shape its own way or given the virus free right of way. It is going everywhere; we don’t know where the virus is now. The virus is striking at will,” Dr Sangma stated, adding that the vaccination programme should have been handled better.
Today Tynsong turned the accusations against the former Chief Minister, saying that they amounted to an attack on the healthcare workers of Meghalaya, who have been, he said, working tirelessly for more than a year to beat the pandemic.
“The team from the Health Department till today haven’t slept. Don’t demoralise our DHS (Director of Health Services), don’t demoralise our doctors, don’t demoralise our nurses and please don’t demoralise our ASHAs and Anganwadis who work hard without sleep,” Tynsong said. “From the government side, we are honest and we are here to make sure that the citizens of the state are safe.”
He requested the opposition Congress and all political parties and stakeholders to work collectively, adding, “I am here to accept the suggestions and views of all.”
