Areca palms in several areas of West Khasi Hills are being destroyed by a disease, which is hurting the livelihoods of farmers there.
This was intimated by the leader of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), KP Pangniang, who has sought intervention by the state government to check the spread of the disease and to compensate farmers for their loss.
Lakhs of areca palms in Tynghor, Domjarain, Nongthymmai, Nongrisan, Nunmati (Mawram), Upper Rangsa, Mikadop, Myndo, Nongmawlein, Upper Kizang, Nongkyndang, Nongrathaw, Nongdiengkain, Baspani, Kamriangsi and Chisempara have been damaged by the disease, which targets the trees’ leaves, Pangniang said.
