Shillong, Feb 15: The number of suspects arrested in the murder of Dilseng Sangma, a member of the ACHIK pressure group, has risen to 13, with one of the latest individuals picked up by police while in hiding in Tripura.
Sangma was killed while he and other ACHIK members were inspecting quarries allegedly operating outside the law. A mob attacked the party on January 9 near Goalgaon village in the Rajabala area. Sangma and one other person sustained serious injuries and Sangma later died at Tura Civil Hospital.
Mozidul Islam, of Bhaitbari in Rajabala, had been evading arrest and had fled to Agartal, Tripura’s capital. Acting on inputs, Meghalaya police headed there on February 12 and traced Islam to a rented home where he was arrested in coordination with Tripura police. He was brought to Tura and produced before a court there on Friday where he was remanded to judicial custody.
Earlier, on the night of February 9, police conducted a raid at Bhaitbari and arrested another accused, Gulbahar Sheikh (45). Two days later, Mominul Hoque (40) was apprehended from Sidakandi village in Rajabala during a follow-up operation.
