As is becoming something of a trait, Director General of Police LR Bishnoi took a walk around Mawlai today to try and see first-hand the issues and challenges of this particular area.
Bishnoi, who had recently done the same thing in Jaiaw, was accompanied by East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger, SP City Vivek Syiem and other police officials. They walked from Mawlai Kynton Massar to Standbus and Phudmuri.
On the journey, Bishnoi interacted with passersby, shopkeepers, youths and traditional leaders. He stopped to chat and enquire about their problems and he urged the youngsters not to indulge in drugs; the Meghalaya police have recently been on a vigorous campaign against drug dealing.
Bishnoi later told reporters that the whole purpose of these jaunts is to create a bond, seek the people’s cooperation and bring policing closer to the people.
Last year Mawlai was racked with instability after police personnel shot dead Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, a former militant, during a raid on his home in connection with a bomb blast a few days prior. The family home is in Kynton Massar.
“The area is peaceful and the residents are very humble. In some localities the people complained about drug trafficking and drug peddlers but, with the help of the people, we want to control this problem,” Bishnoi said.
He also urged the Dorbar Shnong to help the police interact with youths who have fallen prey to drug abuse.
