Shillong, Nov 27: The Directorate of Educational Research & Training (DERT), Meghalaya, launched a six-month certificate course for in-service untrained teachers of pre-primary to Class II at DERT, Nongrimmaw, Laitumkhrah.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui emphasised the need for continuous training to keep pace with the evolving education system, saying, “We need not only qualification, but also training. The system is dynamic—we must be ready for changes.”
Highlighting DERT’s key role in teacher training, Rymbui pointed to the Supreme Court’s September 1, 2025, ruling making TET compulsory, stressing that teachers need adequate training alongside the qualification.
He called for a “mission-mode” approach, appreciating DERT’s recent momentum in introducing two courses in a month and thanking the Cabinet for approving the Meghalaya Teachers Training Academy.
Rymbui also pushed for curriculum updates, modern teaching methods, and integrating technology like AI, saying, “AI is the way forward. We must integrate it into the curriculum.”
He acknowledged infrastructure challenges but urged DERT to explore introducing AI concepts from Class III onwards. Both he and Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma are committed to boosting the education sector with adequate teacher support.
The event was attended by DERT Director R. S. Manners and other officials. The minister formally launched the course, aiming to enhance teacher skills for the foundational stage.
