Angered at the National People’s Party (NPP) not allocating a ticket to him for April’s Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election, Sengnal Sangma, the former Executive Member of the NPP-led executive committee, has resigned from the party along with more than 1,000 of his supporters.
The MDC represented Wagesik constituency and was overlooked by the party in favour of a new face, Bartholomeo D. Shira.
Incidentally, Sangma is the only sitting MDC from the NPP who was denied a ticket to contest the upcoming polls.
Sangma himself confirmed his resignation stating that he was in discussion with his supporters on his future plans.
In a mass resignation, Sangma and his supporters wrote to NPP working president yesterday to announce their intent while calling the move to deny the former finance in-charge of the GHADC a ticket a gross injustice.
The party members that resigned included the working president, vice-president, general secretary and joint secretaries, among others. The decision to resign came about after a meeting held by the former MDC along with his supporters.
In the letter to the party, the resigning members stated, “The reason for the resignation is due to the denial of party ticket to Sengnal Sangma. We consider this a gross injustice and humiliations meted out to the former EM and, as such, resign from the party.”
The party members added that the unceremonious nature of how Sangma had been treated by the party high command was something that they could not take lying down.
“Being the only NPP MDC from South Garo Hills, he has been working tirelessly for the people of his constituency as well as the members of the party. He has never damaged the image of the party and has been very loyal to it since his election to the GHADC. We have decided to part ways with the NPP due to this gross injustice,” said the party members.
