In continuation of their protest over the border settlement signed between Meghalaya and Assam, which would have some areas along the disputed border wind up in the neighbouring state against their wishes, residents of Raid Marwet yesterday held a rally demanding the government revoke the deal.
The protest and public rally were organized at Maikhuli playground, in which the local residents displayed their placards and banners strongly condemning the border settlement. Maikhuli is one of the areas in dispute and residents are furious that land precious to their livelihood, namely a fish pond, has been signed over to Assam.
The residents claim that this has been done without proper verification by the authorities of the land claims and desires of the locals.
The protest was also supported by pressure groups and advocate Erwin K Sutnga, Mawhati MDC Charles Marngar, traditional chief of Hima Nongwah Estansing Jana and village leaders of Raid Marwet of Hima Mylliem.
Jana also said that the government is keen to sell land measuring more than 7,000 acres to the Border Security Force and has failed to protect the land of the common man in the border region.
At the end of the rally, the residents again erected a signboard at the fishery pond claiming it for Meghalaya.
