The demand for inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution deserves support from every quarter and not necessarily on who raised the issue.
Senior lawyer, Erwin K Sutnga made the observation after the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF) slammed Trinamool Congress for taking “credit” for the tabling of the demand at the Parliament stating it was doing it for political gains with elections approaching.
“We should consider it fortunate if there are MPs from other states who have raised this important issue and whether it’s for political mileage or not depends on the public perception,” he said.
He said that they have considered it an important issue and when someone supports the citizen should support it as well.
Stating that political parties would take political mileage, Sutnga said that if the TMC has raised the matter in the Parliament and is getting political mileage, then this is their wisdom.
“When every party is free to put this in their manifesto then I don’t see any problem for someone raising this issue in the parliament,” he added.
TMC MP Sudip Bandopadhyay had recently demanded inclusion of Garo and Khasi languages in the Eighth Schedule at the Parliament.
