On speculation that the district council elections will be postponed, leader of the opposition in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Titosstarwell Chyne said, “My stand was clear that if there is an amendment of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution then the question of extension may arise as there will be new delimitation of constituencies.”
However, he stated that just for reorganising constituencies there are no constitutional grounds to extend the term of the existing.
Such speculation is misleading the public as the people are prepared to see the election happen and candidates are also preparing.
“If they want to extend the house then they should extend the delimitation committee and let it be effective from the next election,” he said. The delimitation committee of the past Assembly was the same where delimitation was completed before 2009 but became effective in 2013, Chyne explained.
He further expressed confidence in his United Democratic Party (UDP) and informed that the party has started the process of identification of candidates and reorganisation of the party for the council election.
