Teachers in deficit pattern schools have appealed for the end of what they describe as discrimination against them when compared to the way teachers in deficit schools in the state are treated.
The Deficit Pattern Schools Teachers’ Association (DPSTA) held its general meeting here on July 26.
There are 13 deficit pattern schools in Meghalaya – nine secondary and four upper primary.
Unlike full-fledged deficit teachers, those working in deficit pattern schools only receive their basic pay plus dearness allowance (DA).
The DPSTA wants the 127 deficit pattern teachers in the state to also be given medical allowance, hill allowance, house rent allowance, increments for higher educational qualifications and gratuity.
“If the teachers are the nation’s builders and the architects of society, why is there so much of impertinence and discrimination in terms of facilitating the same other allowances to all schools that are under the deficit pattern category?” a press release from the association said.
The teachers want “justice and equal pay for equal work” and have met the Chief Minister, Education Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and the Director of School Education and Literacy on Monday in this regard.
