Shillong, Oct 20: After weeks of tension and delayed paddy harvesting, authorities from Meghalaya and Assam have successfully brokered a peace agreement between Pnar villagers of Lapangap and Karbi villagers of Tahpat.
The agreement was reached during a crucial coordination meeting held at the Assam Border Outpost (BOP) in Khanduli on Monday.
Both sides have agreed to allow the harvesting of paddy to resume peacefully, ensuring that agricultural activities continue without further disruption.
The two communities have mutually decided to cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the death of Oriwel Timung of Tahpat village, who died on October 8 following a clash between the two groups.
The meeting was attended by the West Jaiñtia Hills ADC and Border Magistrate GH Passah, Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police R Barua from West Karbi Anglong district, Prominent headmen and associations from both districts
The authorities have urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and ensure that the agreement is respected. The meeting marks a significant step towards restoring normalcy in the area and promoting peaceful coexistence between the two communities.
