District councils that fail to keep to their obligations under the Constitution should have their funding cut, the Trinamool Congress’ George Lyngdoh has said.
All three district councils in Meghalaya are behind on the submission of their accounts to the Comptroller and Auditor General, as the latter informed Governor Satya Pal Malik recently. There is a possibility that a probe will be launched into the matter.
Lyngdoh today said that the government should give the councils a final warning before taking strict action, including halting the transfer of funds to them, on which the councils largely depend.
The TMC is in opposition in all three councils.
Poor financial record keeping and management will only lead to accusations of corruption and bring about a lack of confidence in the administration of the councils.
“If the government feels that they (the district councils) are not responding, then what is stopping the government from halting the funds going to these institutions?” he queried.
