The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has demanded the withdrawal of the curfew imposed since yesterday night because of the disturbance brought about by the killing of Cherishterfield Thangkhiew and opined that deployment of paramilitary forces could make the situation worse in the present situation.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, HITO president Donbok Dkhar said that the sudden declaration of curfew has hit farmers hard as they are not able to bring their produce to market.
The pressure group put the blame for the deterioration in law and order at the feet of the government and said that the failures of those in power should not result in distress for the masses, especially the farmers who are already facing problems brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dkhar further said that the deployment of paramilitary forces in East Khasi Hills is like spilling petrol on a fire and he hoped the CM will solve the matter positively and bring back peace in the state.
