KHADC chief, Titosstar Well Chyne today said that culprits responsible for the downfall of the state-owned cement company, Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL) should be brought to book and cannot roam about freely.

“The government should unearth everything and find out the reasons for the collapse of the MCCL. Whether it is mismanagement or corruption, the culprit responsible for its downfall cannot just roam free,” Chyne said at the ‘Save MCCL Campaign’ held in Saitsohpen on Saturday.

Slamming the government for its failure to manage MCCL that has put the livelihood of many people working there in great difficulty, he questioned, “If the government cannot even manage one cement plant, how it can manage the entire state.”

Stating that the government has invested crores of rupees to revive the comatose cement company, he also demanded immediate action to be taken by the government to save the unpaid employees working in the factory.

“If the government takes another two-three years to address this problem where will the employees go and what will they eat,” he said, adding, since the Hima Mawmluh has given its consent to the state government to manage the MCCL, it can no longer delay and make excuses.

While the MCCL employees also called off the indefinite hunger strike after the Chief Minister assured them of their salary Chyne said another problem that they are facing is power cut as MeECL has withdrawn electricity.  He assured that these matters will be taken up.

“I want to make it clear that I will not play politics with an issue which relates with the life line of Sohra region,” he said.

Convener of the ‘Save MCCL’ campaign, Wellborn Bynnud said that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will not be able to run the State because even for a cement company he has decided to go for a joint venture.

He said, “If the government goes into joint venture 70 per cent of the money will be borne by the State and therefore it will be useless. In fact the government should run the MCCL on its own and even the remaining 20-30 per cent profit will come on its own.”

Bynnud said that the organisers of the campaign will soon meet to force the government to start operation of the company.
