The Meghalaya government has allotted land at New Shillong Township to the CRPF to build permanent base, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said today.
The letter of allotment for 10 acres of land was handed to the CRPF at a meeting held at the Main Secretariat.
The Chief Minister in a video statement after the meeting said that the CRPF have for many years put up a request for a permanent location and camp as its different battalions and companies have been kept in different parts of the city. These are on a temporary basis, an arrangement which was extended for a very long time, he added.
Sangma said the permanent camp which is situated next to IIM will facilitate the process of shifting the temporary camps. He said shifting will commence once the finalisation and approval is given by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
At the meeting, Sangma said the government discussed on the shifting of the camps in certain locations especially in Mawlai area where there has been a demand. They also discussed the way forward for the most suitable utilisation of the land once the temporary camps are vacated by the CRPF.
The Chief Minister said that the Government is contemplating setting up skill and entrepreneurship training facilities or an arts and culture centre in the CRPF camp in Mawlai once it is vacated.
“We had a very productive meeting and we are hopeful that very soon the approval from MHA will come for the taking over of the land by the CRPF which has been allotted by us today”, the Chief Minister said.
