Meghalaya reported 627 new cases of Covid-19 today, the highest single-day tally since the pandemic began last year. There were also another 12 fatalities, which took the death toll in May to 109.
Eleven fatalities were added to East Khasi Hills’ figures, with one in West Garo Hills. All 12 had Covid-19 pneumonia listed as a cause of death.
The deceased were identified as Sherlina Hynniewta (38) of Mawphlang, Tiewmaris Mawthoh (67) of Umlping, Promila Das (97) of Laban, Ellias Lyngwa (69) of Nongrim Hills, Stim Khriam (63) of Nongpathaw Nongshilliang, Mirul Islam (46) of Namabilla, Ram Bahadur Sunar (71) of Nongpoh, Bellington Marngar (63) of Nongstoin, Khlurstep Khonglah (55) of Byrnihat, Vicky Warjri (37) of Byrnihat, Ribansuk Khyriemmujat (34) of Smit and Priyalata Dey (86) of Laban Last Stop.
There have now been 5,357 new infections in the first 14 days of this month, which is more than the total for December to April (5,017).
East Khasi Hills accounted for 361 of today’s reported infections – 11 among returnees, two armed forces/paramilitaries, 208 high-risk contacts, 77 influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), 21 through screening, two health workers, 14 severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), one in Golf Links, one in Jail Road, four in Laitumkhrah, three in Lummawbah, two in Mawlai, two in Mawprem, two in Nongmynsong, one in Nongrah, seven in Nongthymmai and two in Khyndailad.
Ri-Bhoi reported 101 new cases (29 in Khweng, 28 high-risk, 18 in Umiam, 10 in Patharkhmah, two health workers, two returnees, one armed forces/paramilitaries, one SARI, one screening, one in Umeit), West Jaintia Hills 55 (36 high-risk, 17 ILIs, two screening), West Garo Hills 38 (18 high-risk, eight ILIs, eight screening, two health workers, one police, one returnee), West Khasi Hills 24 (10 high-risk, 10 ILIs, four screening), South West Garo Hills 23 (10 in Betasing, eight ILIs, two health workers, two screening, one high-risk), East Jaintia Hills 18 (seven high-risk, seven ILIs, three returnees, one screening), East Garo Hills five (two high-risk, two screening, one ILI), North Garo Hills one (returnee) and South West Khasi Hills one (high-risk).
There were also a record 327 recoveries today – 221 in East Khasi Hills, 37 in West Garo Hills, 34 in Ri-Bhoi, 10 in West Khasi Hills, eight in East Jaintia Hills, seven in North Garo Hills, six in South West Garo Hills, three in West Jaintia Hills and one in South West Khasi Hills.
There are now 4,014 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 2,251 active cases, Ri-Bhoi 568, West Garo Hills 352, West Jaintia Hills 198, East Jaintia Hills 167, South West Garo Hills 154 and West Khasi Hills 138.
In all, Meghalaya has had 22,203 Covid-19 cases, of which 4,014 are active, 17,909 have recovered and 280 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 80.66 percent. The fatality rate has increased to 1.26 percent. More than 3.86 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the state as of today. The seven-day rolling average for new cases now stands at 468.29.
